Cortina / Via Feratta

We arrived in Cortina and met up with Dan's high school buddy Joe and his wife Jessica for dinner at our hotel. The next morning, Dan, Joe, Jessica and their guide left for a three-day "via feratta" (meaning the iron road) hike in the Dolomites.

A little background... during the First World War, the Dolomites were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Italy joined forces with England, France and Russian to fight Austria, and for several years, the war took place in the Dolomites with both sides trying to gain control of the peaks. In order to maneuver across the mountains during bad conditions, the troops installed steel cables, still present today.
