After Rome, we headed to the heart of Tuscany. We arrived in the town of Monticchiello where we stayed for two nights. The landscape here was amazing - fields of sunflowers, rolling green hills and tiny medieval villages.
Dan and Marcus killed time while we waited to check into our apartment ... Laurie and I enjoyed the view.
Monticchiello is a walled, car-free village ... (above) looking through the gate into the town of Monticchiello.
This little wine bar and restaurant just outside the gate of Monticchiello is where we grabbed some drinks and snacks when we arrived.
We made several visits to the town's small playground ...

So quiet... it's like we were the only guests there!!

Breakfast in Monticchiello started with cappucinos and Italian cornettos (filled crossants). YUM!
The next day we headed to Montepulciano! The first stop we made was at a winery where we ended up spending quite a bit of time tasting wine and eating fresh pecorino cheese and bruschetta.
Marcus got in a good nap :)

Like many of the small towns in Italy, no cars are allowed. We parked at the bottom and made the trek up.
Heading through the gate into Montepulciano
Montepulciano was loaded with wine shops.. here's another one we stopped in where we tasted wine and salami.
Marcus enjoyed finding ledges and steps that were just right for sitting. They just happened to be in front of beautiful doors!
After Montepulciano, we drove to the nearby town of Montalcino. This town feature a large fortress built in 1361.
